If you aren't familiar with cataracts, you should learn about them, so you have more knowledge about one of the common eye issues that happens to a lot of people as they age, especially if they are genetically predisposed to the condition. Here are some things you should know about cataracts:

Know the signs of cataracts

One of the first signs that you may be dealing with cataracts can be light sensitivity. However, there are other things that can also cause you to become sensitive to the light, so you want to go in to see the optometrist to find out the true cause of your light sensitivity. Some of the other symptoms of cataracts can also include pain that comes with light sensitivity, blurry vision, hazy vision, a bad glare from lights at night time and the development of a haze on your eyes.

Cataracts tend to get worse as time goes on

If you feel there may be a chance that you might have cataracts, it is important for you to find out as soon as possible. Cataracts are a condition that tends to get worse as it is ignored. This means the longer you go without finding out what's really going on and dealing with it, the worse you can find your cataracts when it's finally determined that you have them. In fact, if you let cataracts go on for too long untreated, then they can become so bad that they can even lead to blindness.

There is a simple test to determine if a person as cataracts

IN some cases, a person can have cataracts for a while before any of the symptoms start to show up. However, there is a simple test that can be done to determine whether a person has cataracts. The optometrist will put eye drops in your eyes that dilates your pupils. They will then use a special device to look in your eyes which allows them to spot cataracts, if they are there.

There is a surgery to fix cataracts

Cataract surgery can be done to treat cataracts in many instances. During this surgery, your lens will be removed and in a lot of cases it will then be replaced by an artificial one. This will help you to get back the vision you had before the cataract developed.
